Merel van Erpers Roijaards' intuitive ways of working result in a body of work that uncovers questions about gender, identity, fashion, religion, handcraft, ritual, and folklore. Through masks and wearable objects in performances she exposes the connections between these various topics. The works are always centered around the human body, although lately there is a growing focus on the space surrounding the body and the relation of space to the body. They show how the body relates to culture in various ways and angles. In her works van Erpers Roijaards tries to capture the tension between attraction and disgust, between beauty and ugliness.
